1863 Civil War Token // Pekin Tea Store // Pittsburgh PA NGC MS65 RB
Product Description
Civil war tokens are privately minted tokens distributed during the United States Civil War in response to the scarcity of Government-issued coins. During the War, American citizens hoarded all gold and silver coins and eventually even the copper coins as well. By 1862, federal coinage nearly disappeared from circulation, making it extremely difficult to conduct ordinary business. In response to this crisis, merchants turned to private minters to fill the void left by the widespread hoarding. Many of the resultant Civil War tokens displayed highly patriotic slogans or images and were decidedly pro-Union. Thousands of varieties exist, making the present-day collection of these interesting relics a challenging and fascinating endeavor. You will receive the unique token shown in the photos.
